When we think of India, most people imagine its warm weather, colorful festivals and tropical beaches. In summer, people often travel to cold places, but do you know that some area of ​​India can be so cold that even a thermometer finds it difficult to measure its coldness? Drass is located in the Kargil district of Ladakh, about 60 km west of Kargil town and about 150 km from Srinagar.  Situated at an altitude of about 10,600 feet (3,230 meters) above sea level, Drass is located in the upper reaches of the Suru Valley and is surrounded by the mighty Himalayas. The Shrinagar- Leh National Highway (NH1) passes through Drass, making Drass an important gateway to Ladakh.

In winter, the temperature drops so much that it becomes difficult for people to go out of the house, so people stay inside the houses most of the time and maintain warmth in the house with wood, cow dung cakes and coal

Dras cuisine has a deep influence of Tibetan and Kashmiri food.

People here mostly eat thick, hot and nutritious food to avoid the cold.

Main dishes:

Thukpa – Tibetan-style noodle soup and

Skyu – traditional Ladakhi dish made of wheat are the main dishes here

Butter Tea (Gur Gur Chai) – Salted tea mixed with butter and salt. These people drink butter tea with great fondness

Khambir – Bread is the local bread here. Apart from this, Yak milk and meat are also commonly consumed here. In winter, people depend on dried meat and stored grains.

Dras valley remains cold for most of the year, so people here wear thick and warm clothes. Pheran (pheran) is a long woolen gown-like cloth that covers the whole body. Under it, people wear warm clothes or woolen pants.

Patu / Goncha – A kind of traditional woolen cloak which is a popular dress in both Ladakh and Dras. People here wear boots made of thick leather or wool on their feet to protect their feet from snow and cold

Women of Dras also wear pheran, which is often decorated with beautiful embroidery. A dupatta or woolen shawl is worn on the head.  On festivals and special occasions, women here wear silver jewellery (earrings, necklaces, armlets).

Men of Drass often wear pheran and woolen cap (karakul topi or Ladakhi cap). Patka (cloth belt) is tied around the waist. In winter, an extra wool layer (inner woolen wear) is very important.


🌸 On festivals and special occasions, people wear colorful pheran and traditional clothes. Women wear heavy silver jewellery.
